From Clipboard to Camera: The role of media in conserving nature’s biodiversity

What: The Steve Irwin Memorial Lecture, presented by Dr Chadden Hunter

Dr Chadden Hunter gave a multimedia presentation of his adventures in conservation biology and wildlife filmmaking. From years spent conserving a rare species of baboon in Ethiopia to scuba diving underneath Antarctic sea-ice filming the affects of climate change, Dr. Hunter shared his journey from UQ Science student to international filmmaker and give an insight into the crucial new relationship between media and wildlife conservation.

This sold-out event, held in conjunction with the University of Queensland Faculty of Science, was the second annual Steve Irwin Memorial Lecture.

Live fast, die young? A youth survival guide

What: Panel discussion chaired by Commissioner for Children and Young People and Child Guardian Elizabeth Fraser, and also featuring Jonty Bush, Elizabeth Cullen, Maggie Dent and Jacinta Hawgood

Today’s youth are confronted with an array of pressures, temptations and societal challenges that can prompt them to ignore the dangers and ‘live fast’. At this sold-out event, our group of expert panelists discussed some of the biggest challenges facing today’s youth and suggested ways young people can help themselves and their peers to survive the danger years.

Elizabeth Fraser, Commissioner for Children and Young People and Child Guardian, discussed Creating child-friendly cities; Jonty Bush, anti-violence campaigner and former CEO of the Qld Homicide Victims Support Group talked about teen violence and the One punch can kill campaign; Elizabeth Cullen, Queensland Policy Manager, Left-Right Think Tank spoke on Youth homelessness; Maggie Dent, author, parent and resilience specialist, covered Developing positive adolescent relationships; Jacinta Hawgood, Deputy Director, Australian Institute for Suicide Research and Prevention, Griffith University, talked about Preventing teen suicide.
